Description

Description
Puerto Piramides is a full-day excursion designed for those who wish to discover one of Patagonia's most fascinating natural destinations and experience whale watching from either a boat or a submarine with complete freedom. The tour includes transportation from Puerto Madryn to Puerto Piramides and a visit to some of the most iconic sites in Peninsula Valdes, allowing each traveler to choose the navigation option that best suits their preferences.

The excursion begins with hotel pick-up in Puerto Madryn before traveling 100 km to Peninsula Valdes. Along the way, a stop is made at the Carlos Ameghino Isthmus and its Interpretation Center, where visitors learn about the history, wildlife and ecosystems that have made this reserve a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The viewpoint also offers spectacular views of Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San Jose.

The excursion continues with visits to Punta Piramides, home to an important colony of South American sea lions and Bird Island (Isla de los Pajaros), one of Patagonia's main seabird sanctuaries. In addition, when tide conditions allow, the tour includes a stop at El Doradillo, a beach where whales often come remarkably close to the shore with their calves.

Upon arrival in Puerto Piramides, each passenger will enjoy the previously booked navigation. You may choose between traditional whale watching aboard semi-rigid boats or the innovative Yellow Submarine experience, a semi-submersible boat that allows you to observe whales both from the deck and through its underwater viewing windows.

During the navigation, Southern Right Whales may approach within just a few meters of the boat, offering the opportunity to admire their breaches, blows and natural behavior in complete freedom. The experience is accompanied by specialized guides who interpret the behavior of these ocean giants and the other species that inhabit Golfo Nuevo.

After the navigation, the return journey to Puerto Madryn begins, following a day exploring some of the most representative landscapes of Peninsula Valdes and enjoying one of the most thrilling wildlife encounters Patagonia has to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Discover the questions other travelers also had before booking.
What is the difference between the Traditional Whale Watching tour and the Yellow Submarine?
The Traditional Whale Watching tour takes place aboard an open semi-rigid boat and lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing you to observe the whales from the surface at a very close distance. The Yellow Submarine experience lasts 2 hours and offers a unique perspective, as you can watch the whales both from the deck and through large underwater viewing windows located below the waterline.
If I book the excursion without a whale watching option, can I still see whales from the shore?
Yes. Even without booking a navigation option, during whale season it is common to spot whales from several locations within Península Valdés, including El Doradillo, where they often approach just a few meters from the shoreline with their calves.
What is the best time of year to see whales?
The Southern Right Whale season runs from June through December, with September and October generally offering the highest number of whales and the most active sightings.
What should I wear for the excursion?

As wind and temperatures can vary throughout the day, we recommend dressing in layers and wearing:

  • Comfortable, warm clothing.
  • Winter hat.
  • Gloves.
  • Scarf.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Comfortable footwear.
