Description
The trekking tour to Laguna Esmeralda in Ushuaia is one of the most accessible hikes that can be done at the End of the World. You will always be accompanied by mountain guides who will show you the natural beauties of this area while you trek for 9 km in total over 6 hours through a beech forest, a peat bog, dams built by beavers and a stream that ends in Esmeralda Lagoon, which is nestled between mountains and glaciers. The tour includes a lunchbox to enjoy next to the lagoon.
The activity begins from your hotel in Ushuaia where we will pick you up in vehicles with the mountain guides to transport you along National Route Nº3 to the beginning of the trekking trail.
Upon arrival and in case the trail is snowy or icy, the guides will provide the necessary equipment to carry out the trek without any difficulty (crampons and trekking sticks). Then, the trekking begins entering the forest through the Lasifashaj Valley along a very clear and marked trail. You will cross several peat bogs, rocky terrain and lenga forests that, depending on the season of the year, may be covered in snow and thus create a magical and enigmatic environment.
Upon reaching Laguna Esmeralda after 5 km trekking, you will see the reflection of the sun on the glaciers in the background and the imposing mountains that surround the lagoon and that create a unique Patagonian landscape. The lagoon is a small lake of glacial origin that owes its name to the color given to it by the sediments that come from the Ojo del Albino Glacier. There you can appreciate the view of the lagoon and its natural environment while enjoying the food included, which is a lunchbox to have next to the lagoon.
To finish the tour, you will trek back along the same path that crosses the forest and peat to where the vehicle waits to take you back to the hotels in Ushuaia.
Important: In order to guarantee the departure of the tour, it is necessary to have at least 2 people confirmed in the group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Discover the questions other travelers also had before booking. How is it recommended to dress for the excursion?
As the weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable, we recommend dressing in layers, including:
- Thermal clothing.
- Fleece sweater or jacket.
- Waterproof jacket or windbreaker.
- Waterproof pants.
- Hiking boots. You can also wear sports shoes with laces, although hiking boots are the recommended option to make the most of the experience.
It is also important to bring:
- Gloves.
- Sunglasses.
- Sunscreen.
- Backpack.
Can I refill my drinking water from meltwater along the way, or do I need to carry water?
It is mandatory to carry water from the start of the hike; we recommend at least 1 liter per person. There are snowmelt streams along the route where you can refill your bottle; however, this water has a high mineral content, so it is recommended to consume it in moderation or mix it with the water you bring.
What are the advantages of taking the tour with a guide instead of doing it on your own?
While the trek can be done independently, doing it with a guide allows for a more complete experience thanks to their knowledge of the flora, fauna, history and characteristics of the environment.
Is the experience suspended due to bad weather?
The excursion is not suspended due to weather conditions, as it takes place in Patagonia, where it is common for the weather to change constantly, and it is considered a mountain activity. For this reason, it is recommended to follow the clothing instructions to be prepared for any eventuality during the experience.
