Description
The Ojo del Albino Glacier Trek in Ushuaia is one of the most demanding trekking challenges, combining adventure, trekking, climbing and glacier travel in the End of the World. You’ll be accompanied throughout the experience by specialized high-mountain trekking guides while covering a total of 21 km, round trip, over 8 to 10 hours, crossing lenga forests, peat bogs, Esmeralda Lagoon and rocky terrain with steep slopes. Upon reaching Ojo del Albino, you’ll be able to admire the glacier views while enjoying a packed lunch.
The activity begins at your hotel in Ushuaia, where we’ll pick you up in a vehicle together with the mountain guides and drive along National Route No. 3 to the beginning of the trekking trail.
The guides will provide the necessary equipment for the activity, including crampons, trekking poles and a helmet. Then, the trek begins along a clear and well-marked trail, crossing a forest, a peat bog and rocky terrain until reaching Esmeralda Lagoon. This first section, approximately 5 km long, is completed without stops and at a steady pace until reaching the lagoon.
After passing Esmeralda Lagoon, the most physically demanding section begins. The trail continues along the right side of the lagoon at a slow and controlled pace due to fallen trees and old inactive beaver dams. Once you leave the vegetation behind, a high-difficulty ascent begins, lasting approximately 2.5 hours and crossing mountainous terrain with continuous slopes and large, unstable rock formations.
During this section, you’ll reach a natural terrace overlooking Esmeralda Lagoon and the Sorondo mountain range, from where you can see Mount Olivia and Mount 5 Hermanos. From there, the final ascent to Ojo del Albino Glacier begins, following the best route through rocky terrain and steep slopes.
This is the most challenging section of the trek, where the guide may assist you with ropes and carabiners to safely overcome the different challenges along the way. Once you make it through, you’ll reach Ojo del Albino, with the impressive Rhino Towers rising behind you. While taking in this natural wonder, you’ll enjoy your packed lunch and a hot soup before beginning the return journey.
The return follows the same trail, completing the total 21 km of the activity. The route passes once again through the Esmeralda Lagoon area, the forest and the peat bog until reaching the point where the vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Ushuaia, after an unforgettable adventure.
Important: To guarantee the departure of the excursion, a minimum of 2 confirmed passengers is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Discover the questions other travelers also had before booking. Is the glacier hike available year-round?
During the winter season, trekking on the glacier is not permitted. At this time, the glacier is covered in snow, and for safety reasons, walking on its surface is prohibited. The use of crampons and glacier trekking are only allowed during the summer season, when ice conditions permit the activity to be carried out safely.
Can I refill my drinking water from meltwater along the way, or do I need to carry water?
It is mandatory to carry water from the start of the hike; we recommend at least 1 liter per person. There are snowmelt streams along the route where you can refill your bottle; however, this water has a high mineral content, so it is recommended to consume it in moderation or mix it with the water you bring.
Is prior experience using crampons necessary?
No. No prior experience using crampons is required. The guides will provide all the necessary instructions to complete the activity safely.
How steep is the final climb to the Ojo del Albino Glacier?
The final climb is the most demanding section of the entire hike. From Laguna Esmeralda, the trail gains altitude steadily across steep terrain with a significant elevation gain. Although there are no ravines or technical sections, the feeling of exposure increases as you ascend, and sweeping panoramic views of the valley and the lagoon unfold.
How is it recommended to dress for the excursion?
As the weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable, we recommend dressing in layers, including:
- Thermal clothing.
- Fleece sweater or jacket.
- Waterproof jacket or windbreaker.
- Waterproof pants.
- Hiking boots (mandatory requirement).
It is also important to bring:
- Gloves.
- Sunglasses.
- Sunscreen.
- Backpack.
