Description

Description
The Minitrekking Perito Moreno tour is a unique opportunity to explore one of the most iconic glaciers in the world. The tour starts from El Calafate and includes a walk on the Perito Moreno Glacier, a boat tour in front of the southern wall of the glacier and a visit to the balconies. Throughout the excursion you will be accompanied by an expert guide.

If you book the tour with transfer from El Calafate, you will be picked up at your hotel to begin the 78 km journey to reach the Perito Moreno Glacier located within Los Glaciares National Park. If the transfer from El Calafate is not included, you must arrive at Bajo de las Sombras Port, located 7 km before reaching the glacier, where you will board a boat to cross the Brazo Rico of Lake Argentino in a 20-minute boat tour.

Once you cross the Brazo Rico of the lake, you will access a shelter where the guides organize groups of up to 20 people. From here you begin a walk along the lake shore, with the view of the Perito Moreno Glacier in front, until you reach the place where you will be fitted with the crampons necessary to begin the Minitrekking. After a talk about glaciology, the tour begins. During the excursion you will appreciate different natural formations, such as crevasses, seracs, sinkholes and small lagoons. At the end of the trek on the Perito Moreno Glacier, you will enjoy a toast on the glacier with whisky and millenary glacier ice.

After completing the Minitrekking Perito Moreno, you will return to the refuge walking along a path in the forest where you will be given a souvenir. Then, you will board again and sail in front of the southern wall of the glacier. Upon reaching Bajo de las Sombras Port, you will be transferred to visit the balconies located in front of the glacier, from where you can have a different perspective of the landscape by visiting the famous balconies of Perito Moreno.

They you will return to El Calafate after having walked on the wonderful Perito Moreno Glacier and having enjoyed a toast with glacier ice.

The Minitrekking in Perito Moreno tour is of moderate difficulty and is carried out on an uneven, but firm and safe ice surface. The excursion does not require previous experience and can be done by anyone who meets the age conditions, the requirements indicated on the website and has a normal physical condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Discover the questions other travelers also had before booking.
If one person in the group does not book this excursion, can he/she still travel to the glacier with the rest of the group but take a different excursion?
Yes. Even if group members have booked different excursions to visit Perito Moreno on the same day, he/she can share the same transfer to the glacier as long as you inform us in advance that you are traveling together. Once in the National Park, each person will do their chosen activity, and then you will meet to walk the Perito Moreno Glacier balconies together for about 1 hour before returning to El Calafate. You must check the possibility of combining excursions before booking.
How is it recommended to dress for the excursion?

As the weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable, we recommend dressing in layers, including:

  • Thermal clothing.
  • Fleece sweater or jacket.
  • Waterproof jacket or windbreaker.
  • Waterproof pants.
  • Hiking boots. You can also wear sports shoes with laces, although hiking boots are the recommended option to make the most of the experience.

It is also important to bring:

  • Gloves.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Backpack.
Is it possible to buy food and drinks inside the National Park?
While there is a restaurant inside the National Park where you can buy food and drinks, please note that eating there may reduce the limited time available to walk the balconies, which is 1 hour in total. For comfort, to make the most of the visit time and to enjoy a meal with views of the Perito Moreno Glacier, we recommend taking a lunchbox.
Is the toast with whiskey and glacier ice done on the Perito Moreno Glacier?
Minitrekking Perito Moreno is the only one of the three ice trekking excursions that includes a toast on the glacier. The toast takes place at the end of the walk on the ice, when the group reaches an area assigned for this moment. There, the guide prepares whiskey with ice extracted from the glacier and offers it to the passengers, allowing them to enjoy a unique moment in an exceptional setting.
Can the excursion have schedule changes?
Yes, excursion schedules may change due to operational reasons. In case of changes, you will be informed between 24 and 48 hours before the date of the activity. For this reason, it is recommended not to schedule fixed commitments for the same day of the excursion, such as flights, bus trips or other activities that could overlap with possible tour schedule changes.
Are crampons included in the excursion?
Yes, crampons are included in the tour. Before starting the glacier hike, each passenger will have them fitted over their footwear. A short briefing will then be given on the proper use of the equipment and the necessary recommendations for a safe activity. It is important to note that crampons are a metal structure that attaches to your footwear; they are not the footwear itself. Trekking boots are recommended for this excursion.
During the glacier trek, are formations like the ones in the photos usually found?
During the excursion, it is possible to observe natural formations such as cracks, seracs, sinkholes, small lagoons, and even ice caves. However, their presence may vary depending on the conditions of the glacier at that time, as these are natural phenomena in constant change. For this reason, the images are illustrative and do not guarantee that those exact formations will be found during the visit.
What happens if the excursion cannot be carried out?
Although it is highly unlikely that this excursion will be canceled, in case exceptional situations prevent it from taking place, you can choose to do it on a new date, use the paid balance for another experience or request the corresponding refund.
Is the experience suspended due to bad weather?
The excursion is not suspended due to weather conditions, as it takes place in Patagonia, where it is common for the weather to change constantly, and it is considered a mountain activity. For this reason, it is recommended to follow the clothing instructions to be prepared for any eventuality during the experience.
Can you walk from the balconies to Port Bajo de Las Sombras?
Port Bajo de Las Sombras is located about 6 km (3.7 miles) from the Perito Moreno Glacier balconies. For this reason, it cannot be reached on foot and it is recommended to take a vehicle transfer.
Is it necessary to book in advance?
It is recommended to book in advance once your travel dates have been confirmed, as this is a highly demanded excursion with limited availability and spaces subject to confirmation.
Is it possible to take photos or videos during the ice trekking?
Yes, it is possible to take photos and record videos during the walk on the glacier. However, for safety reasons, this will only be allowed at the times and places indicated by the mountain guide.
