Port Almanza and Penguin Colony

On the excursion to Port Almanza in Ushuaia, you will travel along the famous Crab Route while enjoying a unique gastronomic experience at the End of the World. You will visit the world’s southernmost fishing village, which specializes in artisanal crab fishing and in seafood cuisine, such as shellfish, mussel farming and other typical mollusks from the area. Optionally, you can add a boat tour through the Beagle Channel to reach Martillo Island and visit a penguin colony. The excursion allows you to discover the rich marine life and landscapes of this southern region and includes lunch at a local restaurant.

The tour begins when we pick you up from your hotel in Ushuaia at 8:00 a.m. and head along RNº3, making stops at various viewpoints, including the notable Carbajal Valley viewpoint where you can see peat bogs, views of the Olivia River, Tierra Mayor Valley and the Andes Mountains.

After passing by the winter centers, there will be a detour to the scenic “J” route, which is surrounded by lengas and ñires forests and follows the Lasifashaj River through mountains, forests and peat bogs. On this route, you can see beaver lodges and the famous “Flag Tree” at Paso Guaraní.

Upon reaching Port Almanza, a community of artisanal fishermen mainly dedicated to crab fishing and mussel farming, we will explore the picturesque settlement made up of 15 fishing families and their small boats. Then, those who wish to add this service, will board a semi-rigid boat to navigate the Beagle Channel and reach the penguin colony on Martillo Island, where you can observe species like the Papua and Magellanic penguins. After this boat tour, you will return to Port Almanza to enjoy a typical seafood lunch at a local restaurant.

The tour will conclude with the return to the city of Ushuaia at about 5:00 p.m. where you will arrive at your hotel after having visited the southernmost fishing village in the country.
